From Flossie Adoyo, Director and ‘Mum’ of the J&D Children’s Centre: The most exciting development here is that the new Boys’ House, a big thank to all of you Friends of J&D Children’s Centre who have been working so hard to help design and raise money for the J&D Boys House. The exciting news is that it is now half-built – the foundations, walls and roof are completed. Now the children are back at school – but they still talk about the exciting celebrations we had in the holidays and even at Christmas, so here are some photos of us all! Written by Flossie (Floice) Adoyo, co-ordinator and ‘Mum’ of the Children’s Centre I said in my last newsletter that we were planning to move the children from a private school to the local Government-run school, Ebulako Primary School. The private school had problems such as high school fees, levies and biases / prejudice against the children. Also the school increased their fees for this year, which proved to be too much for us. Public primary schools in Kenya are by law supposed to be free (Universal Free Primary Education) but in reality, there are many levies parents have to pay. These include, activity levy, exam fees-both mid-term and end term, desk levy, teacher/parents’ association levy, registration into GoK Information Management System fees, interview fees for new students, and a host of other levies. Other costs include buying books, school bags and uniforms. Anyway, whatever the case, the payments are much lower than what we were paying at the private school before. News from Flossie Adoyo at J&D: Our ‘Julius and Dora’ children are increasing in stature and knowledge by the day thanks to all of you friends of the children. We continually thank God for you for caring, for your love for us and for your support. We are all very happy in our J&D home. Newsletter 5, March 2014 We moved from the rented house in Kakamega to our new home in Maseno on 7th January 2014. This was very exciting for us because we had been looking forward to moving to the new premises for a long, long time. Our new house is very nice and we want to thank God for everybody who has contributed to its construction. Even though the house is not yet completely done, it is habitable and there are just a few things remaining to be done and then it will be completed. When we moved, Rev. Asilutwa (the Vicar from Kakagmega) came with us so that he could pray for us as we moved into the house. He also played with us. Below are some pictures of us at Maseno.
